MMA fans were left outraged after a dangerous late stoppage at a recent event. At Shooto Brasil 132 in Rio de Janeiro, fight fans were left fuming after a featherweight contest between Joao “The Diamond” Oliveira and Willian Prado spiralled into controversy thanks to a dangerously late referee stoppage that many believe put the latter’s safety at serious risk.
It was in the third round when Oliveira landed a perfectly placed head kick that sent Prado crashing to the canvas. Prado went limp and was defenceless, showing all the signs of being knocked out and unable to continue. But rather than stepping in and calling the fight, the referee delayed, forcing a confused Oliveira to throw nearly a dozen follow-up punches before the bout was finally halted. Observers have called it one of the worst officiating moments of 2025.
The fight had been tilting in Oliveira’s favour from the start. Prado was visibly struggling, taking damage, and barely able to mount an offence. That head kick, landing perfectly, should have been the clear signal to end it. But instead, Oliveira paused, expecting the ref to intervene while Prado lay there, motionless, and exposed. Thankfully, the follow-up punches seemed more about finishing the fight than inflicting extra damage, but that doesn’t make the delay any less alarming.
MMA Fans Fuming With Referee’s Actions
Once the clip was posted online, social media erupted immediately, and fans didn’t hold back. “How can he be a ref?” one user asked in disbelief. Another wrote: “I really don’t understand how some refs got the job.”
While one angry fan went as far as saying: “Some refs in MMA deserve actual jail time.”
The incident also drew comparisons to other infamous stoppages in MMA history, where fighters were left exposed long after they should have been protected.
Critics have pointed out that smaller, regional promotions like Shooto Brasil suffer from inconsistent refereeing, but even by those standards, this incident stood out. When a fighter is clearly out cold, delaying the stoppage is extremely dangerous, potentially causing long-term damage or worse, permanent injury. For many, this is a stark reminder that fighter safety should always be non-negotiable.
Oliveira has been praised for his performance after he delivered such a dominant showing, but unfortunately, focus has shifted entirely to what the referee didn’t do. This incident has reignited debates about referee accountability, officiating standards, and how the sport can better protect the fighters who risk everything in the cage.
