Werder Bremen were brought back down to earth on Saturday, falling 0-3 at home to SC Freiburg just a week after their emphatic 4-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Vincenzo Grifo fired Freiburg ahead from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute, and the visitors doubled their advantage shortly after the restart when Junior Adamu – making his first start of the season – converted from Grifo’s assist.
Werder had the chance to claw their way back into the contest when awarded a penalty on the hour mark, but Noah Atubolu denied Romano Schmid with a strong save.
Any lingering hopes of a comeback were extinguished in the 75th minute, when Karim Coulibaly turned the ball into his own net to seal Bremen’s fate.
Freiburg’s second consecutive win lifts the Breisgau side up to sixth in the Bundesliga table, while Werder sit 13th.
