Chelsea ‘Cannot Compete’ With One Player in Team After Bayern Disaster

Trevoh Chalobah had a night to forget in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat away to Bayern Munich on their return to UEFA Champions League football. The English defender scored an own goal, struggled against an in-form Harry Kane and has fueled doubts among his club’s fanbase.

The 26-year-old was recalled from a loan at Crystal Palace midway through last season after Enzo Maresca had initially decided he didn’t want him. He was consistently one of the Blues’ best performers in the second half of the campaign, helping his side finish fourth and win the Europa Conference League.

Maresca may now be pondering whether he was justified when previously looking to part ways with the Englishman after a disastrous night at the Allianz Arena. Both the 26-year-old and his centre-back partner Tosin Adarabioyo were poor in Munich.

Chalobah awkwardly turned Michael Olise’s low driven cross into his own net to give Bayern a lead (20′) before Kane struck from 12 yards (27′). The English striker was brought down by Moises Caicedo in the box and won a contentious spot-kick much to Maresca’s fury.

Chelsea responded immediately through Cole Palmer, who found the top corner with an excellent finish (29′), but the Bavarians were making easy work of a fragile visiting backline. Chalobah and Tosin never looked comfortable up against the pace of Olise and Luis Diaz while Kane’s movement caused all sorts of problems.

Robert Sanchez continued a fine start to the season by making a magnificent save to prevent Olise from netting a third. But he could do nothing about Kane’s second on the night, bending the ball into the bottom corner after wasteful play from Maresca’s men.

A frustrating return to the Allianz where the West Londoners’ first Champions League triumph occured back in 2012 ended in misery. Many of the club’s supporters will be desperate for Levi Colwill to return after watching their defence struggle without the versatile English centre-back on the European stage.

“Deary Me” – Chelsea Fans Turn On Chalobah

If you had asked most Chelsea fans whether they were happy to let Chalobah go last season, they would have disagreed with Maresca’s stance. He was welcomed back as a hero when his loan with Palace was terminated.

Tonight’s display, though, highlights how he isn’t the long-term answer for the Blues, especially if they want to compete for major trophies. He is a dependable defender but not good enough to lead the ‘world champions’ to a Premier League title or Champions League glory.

Fans acknowledged this on X with one stating:

“I cannot wait for the day Chalobah leaves this club for good”

Another supporter alluded to his battle with Kane:

“Chalobah deary me man Kane turns like a t rex and you still get spun”

One fan is dreaming of the John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho days:

“Tosin and Chalobah on MY LIFE THIS IS THE WORST CENTERBACK PAIRING THIS FOOTBALL CLUB HAD EVER HAD”

Another questioned the club’s recruitment:

“You cannot compete with (Malo) Gusto, Tosin and Chalobah all in the same backline. if you cannot see these as a fan/sporting director/manager then football isn’t for you, the last two games have been completely lost with the line up Maresca has put out”

Chalobah is a product of Chelsea’s youth system who has been with the club since his childhood, rising through the youth ranks and becoming a member of their senior team. He’s had several spells out on loan and looked likely to be sold last summer until a loan agreement was reached with Palace.
