Paul Scholes has torn into Manchester United after they let a potential summer signing slip away and join their rivals. The former Red Devils midfielder, one of the greatest in Premier League history, has grown increasingly tired of his old club and their constant failings as they try to chase the ghosts of their Sir Alex Ferguson glory days he was a formidable part of.
Right now, the Ruben Amorim train wreck shows no sign of stopping the rot. After finishing with their worst-ever league position in the Premier League era last season, United splashed out £205 million to rebuild their forward line with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko. Yet, just four league games into the new season, progress remains elusive.
A 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last time out only deepened the crisis. Amorim’s win rate now sits at just 36.17 per cent – the worst of any permanent United manager since World War II. And while the hierarchy poured time and money into giving the former Sporting boss a new frontline, Scholes believes they made a grave mistake by attempting to patch the roof while the foundations were still crumbling.
Scholes Savages United For Overlooking Gianluigi Donnarumma
One of the standout performers in Sunday afternoon’s Manchester Derby was Gianluigi Donnarumma, making his debut for Pep Guardiola’s side after a £26 million move from Paris Saint-Germain.
The goalkeeping position had been an area of concern for both Mancunian clubs, and Scholes has blasted United for not trying harder to lure last season’s Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season to Old Trafford. Speaking on the BBC Football Daily podcast, he said (watch the segment below):
“Goalkeeper was a major issue. It felt like they got to that Grimsby game, did you really need to get to that Grimsby game to realise [Andre] Onana has not been good enough? ‘Then you see someone like Donnarumma come up, and you think, right, this is a chance. We can buy a keeper here for £35m to £40m who we’ve got for the next 10 years.
“If Man United were not in the market for Donnarumma when he became available, that’s a criminal offence for me. You buy this lad from Belgium [Lammens]. What’s he cost? €20m (£18.2m). I think that tells you everything about him at this point.”
Lammens, having joined from Antwerp on deadline day, was left on the bench on derby day as Altay Bayindir started in goal for United again, despite a series of poor performances. Scholes saw that as a sign that the Belgian is not up to the standard required, as he added on The Good, The Bad & The Football Podcast, as per GOAL:
“It (the fee) tells me he’s not a top goalkeeper. And if he is a top goalkeeper, he’s playing, he’s straight into the big game. Because we know United have got big, big problems in goal.
“The Donnarumma one is the biggest mistake that I can see. As soon as that man became available, drive to Paris, go and get him, give him whatever he wants. He could be easily the best goalkeeper in the world… he reminds me of Peter Schmeichel.”
