Canelo Reveals Who is Better Between Crawford & Floyd Mayweather

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has fought some of the greatest fighters in boxing’s modern era. And, though he came unstuck to both Floyd Mayweather near the start of his career, and, most recently, to Terence Crawford toward the end of his career, the Mexican great compared the two when speaking to GIVE ME SPORT and other reporters on Saturday.

Crawford barely had a scratch on his face, despite going 12 rounds with Canelo — a fighter who, just two years ago would have out-weighed him by 21 pounds, at least. But on the 13th of September, in front of more than 70,000 fans at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the American showed that an extraordinary skill-set can offset a significant weight gap.

Though it was a remarkable win for ‘Bud,’ Canelo did not mind speaking to the media, and had a clear winner in mind when it came to Mayweather and Crawford’s respective greatness.

Canelo Reveals Who is Better Between Crawford & Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather and Terence Crawford

Canelo lost to Mayweather in 2013. It was the first defeat of his career, halting a winning streak that included victories over Shane Mosley and Austin Trout. He responded with a 16-fight unbeaten streak, until he ran into Dmitry Bivol in 2022. His loss to Crawford was his first since then.

Canelo needed no second invitation to declare who was the better fighter between Mayweather, and Crawford.

To GIVE ME SPORT and other reporters, he said:

“I think Crawford is way better than Floyd Mayweather.”

Canelo’s record now stands at 63 wins (39 KOs) against three losses and two draws.

It is unclear where he goes from here, considering he showed no real signs of fighting his emergent rival from recent years — David Benavidez, a former super middleweight champion turned light heavyweight — as he seemingly preferred to bring a super welterweight up from 154 to compete against at 168.

Whether he regarded Crawford as a low-risk, high-reward type of fight is also unclear, but suffice to say the American commanded his respect shortly after the opening bell; likely in the fourth round, when it seemed to dawn on Crawford that he had the better of Alvarez.

Elsewhere on the 10-bout card, Brandon Adams decisioned Serhii Bohachuk, Christian Mbilli and Lester Martinez shared a draw in a super middleweight banger, and Callum Walsh edged Fernando Vargas in the co-main event. The opening bout saw Marco Verde – regarded as the next great Mexican fighter — add a third win to his pro resume, as he stopped Sona Akale in the fourth round.
