Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has been ruled out of the Champions League clash with Newcastle United this week.
The Magpies are set to return to Europe’s elite competition for the second time in three years and will host the La Liga champions in their first of eight league phase games on Thursday night.
And now Eddie Howe’s side have received a major boost ahead of the game after it was revealed that Ballo d’Or frontrunner Yamal is set to be absent following the international break.
Lamine Yamal Ruled Out of Newcastle Clash
Yamal, who has been described as a ‘superstar’, featured for the Spain national team during their victories over Bulgaria and Turkey, where the European champions won 3-0 and 6-0.
The 18-year-old registered three assists across the two games, but Barcelona boss Flick has now revealed that the player is set to miss the next couple of games after being given pain-killing injections to play those games.
“Spain gave him painkillers and even when they were winning they made him play.
“This is not taking care of the players. I’m very sad about this.”
Yamal is also set to miss the league game against Valencia this weekend, which could provide a platform for Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford to come into the starting lineup to replace him.
Newcastle have their own injury issues heading into the game with midfielder Jacob Ramsey set to be absent with an ankle injury until after the next international break, while there are doubts of Yoane Wissa’s fitness too.
The DR Congo striker signed a long-term deal to join on deadline day in a £55m transfer from Brentford after a summer-long saga.
But the 29-year-old is unavailable to make his debut in the Premier League clash against Wolves later today after picking up a knee injury on international duty in midweek, and he is also a doubt for Barcelona too as he is set to see a specialist.
