Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels praised their performance against Manchester City but showed frustration after losing 2-1 despite leading with 10 minutes remaining.
“We were tired, we fought a lot and it wasn’t because of the tactical change [that we lost], that would be an excuse,” said Hummels. “It was because we just allowed two free balls 20 metres in front of goal. We were broken, that’s okay, because we sacrificed ourselves. But it wasn’t because of the system, it was because we became passive.”
John Stones equalised with 10 minutes remaining, former Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland scored a winner six minutes from time. Hummels added: “The frustration is very deep because we have to take a point. The frustration clearly outweighs the rest.”
BVB head coach Edin Terzić also believes that his side should have come away with at least a point after limiting Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to zero chances on target on Stones’ equaliser.
