Newcastle United are firming up plans to appoint Ross Wilson as their next Sporting Director, according to the Telegraph.
As per the report, the move is expected to happen soon. Wilson is considered the leading candidate to fill the position and bring stability back to St. James’ Park.
Wilson’s track record at Nottingham Forest speaks volumes. Since joining the club in 2023, the 41-year-old Scot has played a central role in their transformation.
Under his stewardship, as both Chief Football Officer and sporting director, Forest qualified for European competition for the first time in decades.
Newcastle United are set to appoint Ross Wilson
He oversaw 17 of their 24 summer signings, bringing in talents like Callum Hudson-Odoi, Anthony Elanga, Nikola Milenković, and Murillo. These impactful moves helped reshape the squad into a top-10 force.
Prior to that, Wilson built credentials at Rangers, guiding their recruitment during a period that culminated in a Scottish league title and a Europa League final appearance.
His resume also includes senior roles at Southampton, Huddersfield, and youth development stints at Falkirk and Watford.
Newcastle’s manager Eddie Howe strongly supports Wilson’s appointment. The pair reportedly share a good working rapport, a relationship missing in previous recruitment disruptions caused by Paul Mitchell’s abrupt departure.
The club’s summer window has been tumultuous, plagued by stalled deals and internal turbulence.
Magpies need stability at the club

With Newcastle’s sporting strategy in limbo and the PIF-backed ownership demanding better structure, Wilson’s proven ability to build squads and integrate into coaching structures could be exactly what’s needed.
It is going to be another major loss for Forest who have sacked manager Nuno Espirito Santo and replacement him with former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.
The start of the season has been disastrous for Forest and now with the changes at the club, Postecoglou has a difficult job bringing stability back to the club.
