Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag looked to have found an ideal new job after being appointed as Bayer Leverkusen boss back in May, signing a three-year deal at the BayArena – but he’s already been sacked after just two Bundesliga games, and now his eye-watering severance pay has been revealed.
Ten Hag spent two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, enjoying a solid debut campaign via a third-placed finish in the Premier League and a League Cup win – but his tenure turned sour from there. Only mustering an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League – which was then United’s worst-ever – an FA Cup win kept him in the job, and he was sacked just nine games into the new campaign, taking just 11 points in that time.
Erik ten Hag’s Payout by Bayer Leverkusen Revealed
The job at Leverkusen looked to offer him a route back into the managerial game, in a country where he had already coached at Bayern Munich, and for a side who had experienced incredible success over the past two seasons.
However, he was sacked on Monday after just two Bundesliga games. A 2-1 home loss to Hoffenheim on the opening day of the season, before chucking a 3-1 lead away at Werder Bremen despite being a man to the good, conceding in the last minute to leave them winless in the table. In fact, Ten Hag’s only win came against fourth-tier minnows Sonnenhof Großaspach in the DFB-Pokal, a game they should have won easily anyway.
And, according to German outlet Sport Bild, it has cost the Champions League outfit close to €6million (£5million) in total to sack him, as well as his salary over the course of the two months he was in the dugout at the BayArena – working out at around €100,000 (£87,000) per day for his 62-day reign.
It was always going to be a tough act to follow in replacing Xabi Alonso, who famously led ‘Die Werkself’ to a domestic double without losing a game, as well as almost winning the Europa League before losing to Atalanta in the final – but Ten Hag has failed at that spectacularly and he will now look to find another management role.
Ten Hag was only sacked by United in October, making it two dismissals within a year for the former Ajax boss – and where his next job will be remains to be seen after a declining stock over the past 12 months.
