Deion Sanders’ Son Gets Cut By Buccaneers After Making ‘Inexcusable’ Mistake

NFLlegend Deion Sanders has had a terrific head coaching career at the college level thus far. The 58-year-old took over HBCU Jackson State in 2020 with relatively little experience in the profession.

Sanders, however, led the Tigers to two straight double-digit winning seasons before leaving for the Colorado job. The Buffaloes subsequently went from 1-11 in 2022 to 9-4 last season and are looking to continue trending in the right direction.

A significant portion of Deion’s success can be attributed to the development of his two young sons, Shilo and Shedeur. Both made very successful transitions from the FCS to FBS level, and subsequently found themselves on NFL rosters shortly after.

However, Shilo, unfortunately, is looking for a new team after a surprising incident in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ last preseason game.

Shilo Sanders Was Waived After An “Inexcusable” Mistake Against The Buffalo Bills

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced off against the Buffalo Bills last Saturday in the final tune-up game before the regular season. Both franchises are heading into 2025 with strong cultures and Super Bowl-caliber aspirations.

Tampa Bay has now made it to the postseason five straight years, winning four NFC South titles and one Super Bowl during this run. There’s been a changing of the guard with Todd Bowles taking over as head coach and Baker Mayfield replacing Tom Brady as the starting quarterback, but this franchise is still in very good shape.

Shilo Sanders subsequently signed with the Buccaneers after going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. Early on, the 25-year-old was drawing praise from coaches and fellow teammates, looking poised to potentially earn a roster spot.

Sanders’ performances during preseason were a bit uneven, but he came into last Saturday poised to make an impression amid a crowded safety locker room.

Unfortunately, Shilo made the wrong impression against the Bills. In the second quarter, the Bucs’ safety got into a heated altercation with Buffalo tight end Zach Davidson, throwing a punch and getting ejected in the process.

A day later, Sanders was waived by the Bucs, with this incident likely being the final straw. In the postgame of the preseason loss, Todd Bowles reacted to a question about Shilo’s altercation with a disappointed look on his face.

Shilo is currently waiting to see if a team claims him off waivers. There are plenty of franchises that could use some added secondary depth, including teams in a similar spot to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

If no one calls, Shilo is additionally drawing some interest from the Canadian Football League. Another player who might also have to consider the CFL is Shilo’s brother, Shedeur, who is currently listed as the fourth-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

Shedeur shockingly dropped to the fifth round of the NFL Draft after being projected as a first-round pick. He subsequently entered a somewhat dysfunctional quarterback situation in Cleveland and now looks to be barely clinging to a roster spot.

Despite the bad string of news, both Sanders’ brothers are still very early in their professional careers, and this could just prove to be a speed bump in their NFL journeys.

Meanwhile, Deion is preparing for his first season without either of his sons in Boulder in a seemingly open Big 12 Conference. The future is uncertain for all three, but also exciting, given the numerous directions it can take.

In a recent interview, Deion, as he often does, chose to focus on the positive side of Shilo’s situation, showing support for his son as he seeks another NFL opportunity.
