Arguably, the biggest debate in the world of boxing is around who exactly is the greatest fighter of all time. Fans, analysts, and fighters across many different generations of the sport have varying opinions about who is the very best to grace the squared circle, and some of the most common names who get mentioned are the likes of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson. However, the debate isn’t easily agreed on.
Many legendary boxing names over the years have given their opinions on the debate, and the latest to do so is Terence Crawford. ‘Bud’ is, of course, just weeks out from by far the biggest fight of his professional boxing career so far against Canelo Alvarez, who is a man who many people consider to be one of the greatest of all time, however, not only has Crawford snubbed his upcoming opponent when naming the greatest boxer of all time, his pick is arguably very controversial.
Terence Crawford Names Floyd Mayweather the Greatest Boxer of All Time
Although Floyd Mayweather’s name is often brought up when debating who the greatest boxer of all time is, with an undefeated professional boxing record of 50-0, the boxer is often overlooked when people name their true boxing GOAT, with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Sugar Ray Leonard being the most common names who are placed ahead of him.
One man who has not overlooked Mayweather and has instead recognized his sheer brilliance is Terence Crawford. During an interview with SecondsOut, ‘Bud’ gave ‘Money’ his flowers and was extremely complimentary of his skillset.
“In my opinion, the best boxer in history is Floyd Mayweather. His punches were very powerful, and he managed to defeat virtually all of his opponents in professional boxing.”
The most interesting thing about Crawford’s comments regarding Mayweather was that, although ‘Money’ was known for his defensive brilliance, Crawford praised his power, which was a trait he didn’t often get a lot of credit for.
Crawford saying Mayweather “managed to defeat virtually all of his opponents” somewhat undersells his achievements, as he actually managed to defeat them all. Although Mayweather was often criticised throughout his career for making fights “boring,” this wasn’t his own doing, if anything, it was simply down to a huge skill gap between himself and his opponents, which is even more impressive when you consider that he shared the squared circle with some of the best and most iconic boxers of all time such as Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya.
