In a recent article, Metro are reporting that the Barcelona midfield ace, Frenkie De Jong, could be offered higher wages than Cristiano Ronaldo to tempt him into coming to Old Trafford. The Dutch midfielder would then be the highest-paid player in Manchester United should he decide to exit Camp Nou in this summer transfer window.
It has also been mentioned that Erik Ten Hag is eager to secure his signature ahead of the next season as he looks to link up with the former Ajax talent, making the midfielder the focal point in his attempt to revamp the entire squad at Old Trafford.
De Jong’s Impressive Number For Barcelona This Season
De Jong has produced some impressive displays at the centre of Xavi’s midfield, performing consistently at a high level at the Nou Camp. He has registered four goals and five assists in 42 matches for Barca this season on all fronts.
This season, the former Ajax talent has performed exceptionally for the Spanish giants based on his average of 0.5 shots, 1.3 key passes, and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga football. De Jong’s an adept playmaker, evident from his passing success rate of 91.3% in the La Liga, making an average of 51.1 passes per game which is an impressive feat in itself (stats via Whoscored).
Should Xavi Cash In On Him Ahead Of The Next Season
The Netherlands international has a skillset which is second to none. One could hardly pressurise him in the central areas of the pitch as he’s quick on his feet and maintains composure while getting past defenders.
Furthermore, De Jong has comprehensive vision, which allows him to create opportunities for his teammates in the final third, setting them up with a clear path to the goal. He can time his tackles well and contributes heavily towards regaining possession of the ball.
Xavi would be wise to keep him at Camp Nou, as the 25-year-old still has his best years ahead of him and could help Barcelona in recapturing the La Liga title. Even so, the Barcelona board remains under pressure of maintaining its financial position and the former Ajax talent is looking to move away.
Should the Dutch midfielder choose to go with Manchester United, he could reunite with Erik Ten Hag, playing a key role in a much-required rebuild at Old Trafford, as the summer transfer window commences.
