Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Crystal Palace talisman Eberechi Eze, who has snubbed the chance to sign for Tottenham Hotspur in favour of the Gunners – and the number the 27-year-old will ‘almost certainly’ be wearing for the club has now been revealed.
One of the biggest Premier League sagas of the summer transfer window, Arteta and Co have managed to hijack Eze’s move to Spurs, which looked close to completion. Arsenal fans are, of course, thrilled at the Englishman’s summer arrival.
Eze being a boyhood Arsenal fan and talks with Andrea Berta and Arteta in June have been cited as the reasons why he’s opted to link up with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka instead of moving to the white half of north London – but what number will he don?
Eze’s ‘Almost Certain’ Shirt Number Amid Move to Arsenal
It’s clear to see why some of England’s top clubs are interested in the Queens Park Rangers academy graduate’s services; last season alone, he plundered 25 goal involvements in 43 assists, while he also spearheaded his employers to FA Cup glory.
Expected to become the capital club’s seventh signing of the summer, there are plenty of questions surrounding his arrival. What position will he play? What does this mean for the development of Max Dowman, Ethan Nwaneri and the like?
Also, what number will the attacking midfielder – widely regarded as one of the best dribblers in the Premier League – wear?
Luckily for the Palace ace, his preferred shirt number – No.10 – is expected to become his, according to Sports Illustrated. Vacated by now-Fulham star Emile Smith Rowe, Eze is expected to adopt a number worn by the likes of Mesut Ozil and Robin van Persie, who are two of the club’s greatest-ever No.10’s.
Watch what Eze will bring to Arteta’s Arsenal below:
In his senior career, Eze has worn five different shirt numbers – which started with No.39 for QPR in 2016/17. While on loan with Wycombe Wanderers the following season, the fleet-footed ace took over the No.27 across his six-month spell.
Upon being recalled by QPR, Eze adopted the No.30 shirt for the latter part of the 2017/18 campaign; but the No.10 quickly became his after a string of impressive displays saw him become the club’s go-to creator-in-chief.
Such performances saw him catch the eye of Selhurst Park chiefs – and a move came to fruition in the summer of 2020. Initially, he wore the No.25 shirt, but he took over the No.10 shirt in 2021/22 from Andros Townsend, who had moved to Everton.
And he’s expected, thanks to the number being available, to continue the trend upon his cross-London move to the Emirates Stadium. A myriad of elite stars, as mentioned, have worn the number: among the aforementioned names, Dennis Bergkamp, Kevin Campbell and Charlie George spring to mind.
