Manchester United may still be able to get a deal over the line for Paris Saint-Germain star Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer, ESPN journalist and former Premier League star Jan Aage Fjortoft claims – which he believes will be more than enough to help the Red Devils finish in the top six in the Premier League.
The £300,000-a-week PSG stopper was on top of the world after their Champions League win, in which the Ligue 1 champions beat his former rivals Inter Milan 5-0 in an incredible final back in late May, being named in the Team of the Season and taking home yet another major accolade at the age of just 26.
Fjortoft: Donnarumma to Man Utd ‘Has a Chance’ This Summer
However, with the French outfit signing Lille star Lucas Chevalier, that has incredibly seen the Italian placed on the transfer list, announcing that he would be leaving last week. That has opened the door to a move for United, who have struggled with keeping woes for quite some time.
Andre Onana has been in poor form for the club ever since his move from Inter two years ago, leaving Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim with little choice but to look for alternatives – and with that in mind, Fjortoft believes that there is a chance that Donnarumma could end up at Old Trafford in the remaining 12 days of the window, despite links to local rivals Manchester City in what would be a major u-turn.
He posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Manchester United need a new goalkeeper if they are to have any realistic hopes of finishing in the top six.
“Donnarumma is a world-class keeper, and I understand there’s still a chance he could end up in Manchester….on the red side of the city.
“The challenge for United, though, is that they’ll need to move at least one goalkeeper out before that becomes possible.”
Backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has been linked with moves away from Old Trafford in previous months and years, though Onana would be the ideal candidate, owing to his large wages and the fact that United wouldn’t have two stars who would both expect to be first-choice, likely presented to Onana that way when he joined.
Donnarumma would bring a wealth of experience, having amassed 215 Serie A appearances, 104 Ligue 1 appearances, 40 outings in the Champions League and an incredible 74 caps for Italy, all whilst winning seven major honours at club level and the EURO 2020 trophy with Italy after he saved two penalties in the shootout in the final vs England.
