Sky Germany – as relayed by transfermarkt.de – is currently confirming a report originating in the Athletic concerning RB Leipzig’s interest in Christopher Nkunku. According to the German broadcaster, RB Leipzig and Chelsea have never officially broken off talks about a potential swap deal involving Xavi Simons and Christopher Nkunku. Nkunku’s former Bundesliga club may also still be interested in purchasing the €35m-valued striker outright.
German record champions Bayern Munich were evidently interested in acquiring Nkunku on loan, but were rebuffed by the London outfit. Borussia Dortmund are also not interested in paying upwards of €50m for the 14-times-capped French international. Leipzig could be willing to meet this asking price, but there’s much to speak against it.
The German Red Bulls – despite having plenty of private financing – are still operating with an estimated €25m summer transfer deficit. Such a context renders anything other than a swap deal unlikely. Even if Leipzig agree to sell Simons, they will likely request some €35m in additional fees from the Blues.
