Man Utd ‘Informed’ on £50m Midfielder as Baleba Deal Collapses

Manchester United have yet to start concrete talks over a late deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand, GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The Old Trafford side were linked with a surprise move for the Danish international in recent weeks but have not yet made the first step in trying to sign Hjulmand ahead of the transfer deadline.

Romano claims the 26-year-old’s Sporting departure in the final two weeks of the window remains difficult, as the Portuguese club are unwilling to sell more of their top players following Viktor Gyokeres’ move to Arsenal.

Man United are believed to be staying informed on developments regarding Hjulmand, as he is a player who has ‘always been on their lists’ amid their ongoing search for a new midfielder.

The Red Devils ended their pursuit of top target Carlos Baleba last week after receiving indications from Brighton that the 21-year-old is not for sale this window.

Morten Hjulmand Sporting Exit ‘Difficult’

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has suggested that Hjulmand’s departure from Sporting remains difficult this summer amid Man United’s long-standing interest in the midfielder.

“Manchester United can go for Morten Hjulmand, a midfielder from Sporting. Obviously, Ruben Amorim knows the player so well, he’s a player who’s always been appreciated by Amorim.

“But there are two points. First point, Sporting don’t want to sell other top players after losing Viktor Gyokeres this summer, so it would be a tough and difficult deal to do.

“Second point, Manchester United, at the moment, have not started concrete talks, real talks, for Morten Hjulmand.

“They are informed about the situation because he is a player who’s always been in their list, one of the players they’ve been following for sure.”

Ruben Amorim knows Hjulmand well, having signed him for Sporting two summers ago from Serie A side Lecce and fielded him 65 times during their time together at the Lisbon club.

Hjulmand was a key player in Sporting’s title-winning campaigns over the past two seasons, making 58 league appearances, scoring six goals and providing four assists.

The £50m-rated 26-year-old was made Sporting captain last summer, following Sebastian Coates’ departure, and kept the armband ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, where he has so far played every single minute in the first three games.

Hjulmand, who has won 19 caps for Denmark, is under contract at Sporting until the summer of 2028.
