Newcastle United have completed the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey in a £40m deal, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.
The Magpies and Villa go head-to-head this weekend in the Premier League as the new campaign gets underway, and the two clubs have been in discussions over a potential transfer deal this week.
Jacob Ramsey Completes £40m Move to Newcastle
Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey has completed his £40m move to Newcastle United, according to GIVEMESPORT sources. The former England Under-21 international travelled to Tyneside last night for a medical ahead of his switch from Aston Villa.
The deal brings to an end the Magpies’ chase for the 24-year-old who has been allowed to leave by Villa amid ongoing issues over profit and sustainability. Ramsey had cut a frustrated figure at times last season as he struggled for game time as Unai Emery’s side battled on three fronts.
Villa’s boss had recruited Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford and both were preferred to the home-grown talent. Uefa have already issued sanctions against Villa – a £5m fine with £15m suspended – for failure to comply with their regulations, although the club had no such problems with the Premier League after selling their women’s team to an associated company.
And Ramsey’s sale will help with any calculations, moving forward. He is a product of the club’s academy and all of the fee will be used to offset against any losses sustained in their financial accounts.
Emery was understood to be in a position where he had to sell before he could buy and it remains unclear if he will move into the market. Villa confirmed the arrival of Evann Guessand last week in a £30m deal and the Ivorian may be considered a direct replacement for Ramsey.
