Liverpool In Talks Over £30m Deal for ‘Phenomenal’ Star

Liverpool are still interested in signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this summer, but don’t want to pay above £30m, GIVEMESPORT sources understand.

The Reds have had an incredible summer transfer window so far, with Arne Slot adding Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike to his squad, while they are also pushing to bring in Newcastle United star Alexander Isak too.

But central defence remains an area of priority interest before the window slams shut, following the departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, and Guehi is someone who the club are very keen on.

Liverpool Eyeing £30m Deal for Guehi

So far Anfield chiefs have shown caution about making a formal offer for the England international, who has been described as “phenomenal”, because of the conditions set by Palace for a deal.

The Eagles captain is in the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, and GIVEMESPORT understand Palace are holding out for a fee in excess of £40m. This comes after rejecting an offer worth £70m from Newcastle United last summer, and one from Spurs in January for a similar price.

Because of Guehi’s contract situation though, Liverpool don’t feel that Crystal Palace are in a strong position in term of holding out for that asking price, and have so far been willing to wait until nearer the end of the window to ensure they get a deal closer to their own valuation. GMS understand they value Guehi at no more than £30m during this transfer window.

It’s also understood that Liverpool know the player is keen on a move to Merseyside, with one top source telling GIVEMESPORT that it “felt like Liverpool or nothing” in terms of Guehi leaving this summer. However, Palace are desperate to not lose him on a free transfer next summer.

GIVEMESPORT’s football correspondent Ben Jacobs has revealed that Liverpool have now opened talks with Palace about a move for Guehi.

There has been more interest in Guehi from other clubs, with his former club Chelsea also keen. However, the Blues have not yet made a move for the defender, despite losing starting central defender Levi Colwill for the majority of the 2025/26 season after he ruptured his ACL during pre-season training.

Newcastle also looked into revisiting their move, but learned that the player is not interested in joining them anymore.

GIVEMESPORT sources have previously reported that Palace are keen to sell this summer, but Guehi is open to staying at Selhurst Park for the final 12 months of his contract to ensure he gets regular playing time ahead of the World Cup next year. Club owner Steve Paris stated publicly that he wanted some closure to the situation before the window closed, and Liverpool are hoping that will favour them as a result.
