RB Leipzig could be set for a sensational reunion with former star Christopher Nkunku, though significant financial hurdles stand in the way to sign the Chelsea attacker.
According to Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg, the Bundesliga club hold Nkunku in extremely high regard and would welcome him back to the Red Bull Arena.
However, a permanent transfer at this stage is described as “currently unlikely” due to the costs involved.
Nkunku enjoyed a successful spell at RB Leipzig, scoring 70 goals for them and 56 assists in 172 appearances for the club.
Chelsea are set to offload Christopher Nkunku this summer
His move to Chelsea has not worked out for various reasons. He has found it difficult to adjust to the demands of the game in England and his fitness issues have made his life difficult at Stamford Bridge.
With the Blues looking to part ways with him this summer, his former club have emerged as one of the contenders to sign him.
Plettenberg reports that Leipzig are not planning to propose a swap deal involving their current midfielder Xavi Simons, despite speculation in some quarters.
If a return for Nkunku were to materialise, Leipzig would only consider a loan move. Even in that case, the structure of the deal would require Chelsea to cover some of his wages.

Nkunku’s current salary at Chelsea is believed to be substantial, and Leipzig would need the London club to cover a significant portion of it.
While a deal remains complicated, the mutual admiration between club and player could play a role in future discussions. For now, Leipzig’s stance is clear, which is the door is open for Nkunku’s return, but only under the right financial conditions.
