Tottenham Hotspur have made tying Harry Kane down to a new long-term contract a ‘priority’ at Hotspur Way, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.
Spurs were not afraid to splash the cash during the summer transfer window and parted with more than £150million, but agreeing fresh terms with Kane is now at the forefront of head coach Antonio Conte’s thinking.
What’s the latest news involving Kane?
Conte has claimed that Kane is happy at Tottenham and he believes the club are heading in the right direction when it comes to persuading him to sign a contract extension.
Having come through the ranks at Hotspur Way, the striker has entered the final two years of his £200,000-per-week deal with the north Londoners.
According to German media outlet Bild, via The Sun, Bayern Munich are urging Kane to hold off putting pen-to-paper just yet.
The report suggests the Bundesliga giants could reignite their interest in the 73-cap England international next summer and there is growing confidence that they will be able to get a deal done.
Bayern chief executive Oliver Kahn has previously described a move for Kane as ‘a dream of the future’, but sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has insisted the former goalkeeper is not pushing for a transfer.
What has Tom Barclay said about Kane?
Barclay believes Spurs will be doubling down in their efforts to convince Kane to sign a new contract now that the transfer window has closed.
The journalist understands that Conte is desperate to see the 29-year-old remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the foreseeable future.
Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it is definitely a priority for Tottenham. Conte has spoken quite publicly about his desire to see Kane sign a new contract.
“He did as much in pre-season, before the transfer window closed, when we were out in Israel with him.
“But I think he spoke about it again after the Nottingham Forest game about how he hopes it happens.”
Would tying Kane down to a new contract be a coup?
Tottenham may have strengthened their attacking options by forking out £60million to sign Richarlison from Everton in the summer, but persuading Kane to put pen-to-paper would be an even more significant piece of business.
He has found the back of the net 253 times in 393 appearances for the north Londoners, emphasising how valuable he is to Conte and the club.
Kane is also the third most prolific star in Premier League history, sitting just 72 goals behind frontrunner Alan Shearer, so it would be extremely difficult to replace him if he were to snub a new deal and move onto pastures new in the not-too-distant future.
