Sir Alex Ferguson ‘Would Have Already Signed’ Current England Star For Man Utd

Manchester United have had a 2024/25 season to forget – the Red Devils registered their lowest Premier League finish ever, ending up 15th in the league table, and lost in the Europa League final, which means the club will not be playing European football for the first time in 10 years next term.

The Old Trafford side, with head coach Ruben Amorim in charge, have been rebuilding their squad heavily this summer in an attempt to bounce back, with forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko joining for a combined total of more than £200m.

Anticipated to oversee even more transfer activity before the deadline on September 1, United face plenty of questions over how to return to former glories, and in that context, the club received advice from their former midfielder Nicky Butt, who insisted the Red Devils should have signed a current Premier League and England star this summer.

Butt believes the 27-year-old attacking midfielder would have already been signed by Man United if Sir Alex Ferguson were still in charge, but claimed the club are unable to do so now because ‘they haven’t got the power’ they once had.

Nicky Butt Tells Man Utd to Sign Eberechi Eze

Eberechi Eze

Butt, as quoted by Metro, advised Man United to sign Crystal Palace attacker Eberechi Eze this summer and claimed the England international would have already been a Red Devil if it was 10 years ago:

“Manchester United don’t have that core group so they need to get the cheque book out and sign these £80m players that they used to.

“The lad at [Crystal] Palace, Eze, if it was ten years ago Manchester United would have put a £70-80 million bid and taken that boy. They can’t do it now because they haven’t got the power and that’s the scariest thing.”

Eze, who joined Palace from Queens Park Rangers in 2020, has emerged as one of the finest attacking midfielders in the Premier League over his five seasons at Selhurst Park.

The 27-year-old helped the Eagles win their first major trophy in history with FA Cup success at Wembley in May, scoring the only goal of the match with a precise volley in the first half.

Eze was heavily linked with a Palace exit this summer, with Premier League clubs aware of his expiring contract at Selhurst Park, which runs until June 2027.

Arsenal are believed to be particular admirers of the England international, while a move to Man United looks unlikely, as the Red Devils have already splashed out heavily on two No. 10s in Cunha and Mbeumo.

Eze, who finished runner-up with England at Euro 2024, has amassed 167 appearances for Crystal Palace to date, scoring 40 goals and providing 28 assists.

He has also won a total of 12 caps for England following his first call-up in June 2023, and scored his first goal for the Three Lions in their 3-0 win over Latvia in the 2028 World Cup qualifiers in March.
