Women’s Euro 2025 Player Ratings and Match Highlights

England made a late fightback to win 2-1 against Italy after extra-time to reach the Euros final in dramatic fashion. Early on, Italy were content to hit England on the counter. Although when they did go forward, they demonstrated good, quick passing. The first real chance fell to England’s Alessia Russo, but after the ball found her she was only able to shoot wide of the ‘keeper’s left post.

Italy showed great cutting edge when they took the lead through a fine goal by Bonansea. Martina Lenzini and Sofia Cantore combined wonderfully on the right to create the opportunity for Bonansea ,who made no mistake with a left-footed volley. In the second half, England again saw plenty of the ball, but it was Italy on the counter who looked dangerous. With half an hour left, England looked bereft of any cutting edge.

While England had so much of the ball in the attacking third, they were simply unable to properly test Giuliani. At the other end, Hannah Hampton made a wonderful close-range block to keep England in the contest. Just as Italy were daring to think of victory, Michelle Agyemang showed a good touch to give her a chance of shooting. She made no mistake, levelling for England six minutes into injury time.

Other than the goal, Agyemang looked a worthy starter. Full of energy and with good hold-up play, she looked England’s best player with Chloe Kelly. Agyemang was close to a winner when her lob hit the bar. With penalties looking likely, Beth Mead was wrestled to the ground by Emma Severini. The referee pointed to the spot and Chloe Kelly stepped up to see her penalty saved by Giuliani, yet she was quick to smash in the rebound. England had turned it around after looking all but certain to lose.

Had to remain focused as Italy looked to play on the counterattack. Could do nothing about Bonansea’s goal. Made an incredible save late on to keep England in it.

Would have been disappointed to not have done better with the ball put into the box to give Italy the lead.

CB: Leah Williamson – 6.5/10

Assured on the ball as England had the lion’s share of possession, but unable to prevent Italy taking the lead.

Part of a gaggle of players who won’t look back with much pride at Italy’s first-half goal.

LB: Alex Greenwood – 5/10

Was up against it in the latter stages of the first half and would be disappointed with her involvement in Italy’s first-half goal.

LM: Georgia Stanway – 5/10

Saw very little of the ball in the first half and looked off her best.

CM: Kiera Walsh – 6.5/10

Did not play to her usual standards as Italy stifled her, but she improved drastically in the second half.

RM: Ella Toone – 5/10

Fairly absent and a bit sloppy on the ball at times.

RW: Lauren James – 5.5/10

Saw plenty of the ball and forced Giuliani into a few saves, but on those chances she hit fairly weak shots. Was taken off at half-time due to an ankle injury.

Had a great first-half opportunity but couldn’t hit the target.

LW: Lauren Hemp – 6.5/10

Always looked available but wasn’t able to capitalise on the space she had.

SUB: Beth Mead – 6/10

Brought on at half-time for James, but unable to make a real impact. But did well to win the penalty.

SUB: Chloe Kelly – 7.5/10

Brought on for little more than 10 minutes of regular time. But got into the swing of things by extra- time and showed her ability. Just about kept her nerve to net the winner.

Given five minutes, but it was too late.

Five minutes did not seem enough time for the teenager to make an impact, but deep in injury time she showed her quality with the equaliser. Inches away from a second.

Brought on for the second half of extra time.

Not as needed in terms of making saves as she may have thought prior to the game, but showed a safe pair of hands.

Was very aware of the threat of Lauren James and played accordingly.

Put in a disciplined performance as Italy looked to deny England opportunities.

Another Italian who had to put in a huge amount of concentration in to keep England at bay.

Ended up in attacking positions at times, and was involved in the move to give Italy the lead.
