Liverpool have opened direct talks with the representatives of Real Madrid winger Rodrygo as they explore a summer move for the Brazilian international.
The 24-year-old has become a serious target for the Premier League champions, who are considering him as a possible replacement for Luis Diaz.
Rodrygo remains under contract at Real Madrid until 2028, but his future has become uncertain following the arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick.
Although no formal approach has been made to Madrid, Liverpool’s contact with the player’s camp is described as serious and ongoing.
Sources close to the talks believe the Reds are keen to accelerate discussions if Diaz’s expected departure is confirmed.
Arne Slot’s side are preparing for a busy campaign and see Rodrygo as a high-level addition who can immediately boost their attacking output.
The Brazilian has won two Champions League titles with Madrid and scored 68 goals in 270 appearances across all competitions.
He also boasts 51 assists and has been a regular contributor in some of the club’s biggest matches over the past five seasons.
Despite that, his long-term role in Madrid’s evolving attack is unclear, and Liverpool are hoping to capitalise on that uncertainty.
Arsenal have also been linked with Rodrygo but have not made any direct contact in recent days, despite early interest before the Club World Cup.
Their summer business remains focused on finalising a deal for striker Viktor Gyokeres, with the club already spending over £120m on four new signings.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have held off on further attacking moves since they completed a move for Florian Wirtz, but view Rodrygo as a potential marquee signing.

Reports from Spain and France confirm there has been no agreement between the clubs, though the player’s openness to a move is not in doubt.
Barcelona have also shown interest, but their pursuit of Marcus Rashford may reduce their need for another wide forward.
Any move for Rodrygo is likely to cost upwards of £80m, but Liverpool have not been deterred by the potential fee.
The player is said to have previously rejected Liverpool as a teenager when they first made contact in 2017, but circumstances have changed.
Real Madrid are yet to indicate a final stance, but if Liverpool formally approach, they may be forced into a decision.
For now, Liverpool remain in pole position — and Rodrygo’s future is firmly under the spotlight.
