Marseille left-back Quentin Merlin (23) has joined Ligue 1 rivals Rennes, both clubs have announced. The France U23 international has, like his former Nantes and Marseille teammate Valentin Rongier, signed for his formative club’s arch-rivals. Rennes and Marseille reached an agreement over a €22m transfer fee for the double signing of both Rongier and Merlin, who arrived in Brittany on Monday from Marseille’s training camp in the Netherlands.
Merlin has signed a four-year deal with Rennes. The signings of two experienced Ligue 1 players who both elevate the level of Habib Beye’s squad are a significant coup for newly-named Sporting Director Loïc Désiré, who replaced the dismissed Frederic Massara. Les Rouge et Noir were in the market for a left-back following the €17m sale of France international Adrien Truffert to AFC Bournemouth.
