Manchester United are now focusing on signing a striker and have recently submitted enquiries for Hugo Ekitike and Viktor Gyokeres, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Gyokeres appears to be close to heading to Arsenal this summer, with Fabrizio Romano recently reporting that the Gunners are making progress with Sporting CP over a deal for the Swedish striker. Arsenal have been working on a deal to bring Gyokeres to the Emirates Stadium for a few weeks now, but we’re yet to see him sign on the dotted line.
Adding a striker was always likely to be a priority for United during the summer transfer window, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling for consistency during the 2024/2025 season. The Red Devils had issues in the final third last term, which led to them finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League without winning a trophy.
David Ornstein: Man Utd Striker Update
Gyokeres enquiry claim emerges
Reporting for The Athletic, Ornstein has provided an update on Manchester United’s pursuit of a new striker this summer. The Red Devils are focusing on bringing in a new number nine, and attempted to enter the race for Ekitike, but he had already committed to joining Liverpool.

United also enquired about signing Gyokeres from Sporting, but the Swedish international has made it clear that he wants to join Arsenal. Benjamin Sesko, Ollie Watkins, and Nicolas Jackson are other names potentially on their list and have been discussed, but they are unlikely to pursue any of the trio due to the costs involved.
Trying to beat Liverpool and Arsenal to Ekitike and Gyokeres, respectively, was always going to be a long shot for United, but it shows their intent to bring in a new number nine this summer. With Watkins, Sesko, and Jackson unlikely to be targets for the remainder of the summer transfer window, it will be interesting to see where United turn to.
