Cole Palmer Reveals Conversation With Donald Trump After Club World Cup Victory

Cole Palmer has shed light on a riveting conversation with Donald Trump after the US president handed him the Player of the Tournament award at the FIFA Club World Cup.

The English attacker was at the double in a 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey last Saturday (July 13). It was his third goal in six games, and he also assisted Joao Pedro in the victory over the European champions.

It was a performance that capped off a superb campaign in the United States for the Blues, and high-profile names were in attendance for the game. Trump made the headlines by remaining with the players during the trophy lift, but it was a conversation with Palmer that had fans in stitches.

Palmer looked confused when Trump stayed with the Chelsea squad when Reece James lifted the Club World Cup trophy in the MetLife Stadium stands. He was caught visibly asking: “What’s he doing?”.

That wasn’t the only interaction between the tournament’s best player and the president, as he revealed to The Daily Mail a brief discussion between the duo:

“When he gave me the award, he said his son is my biggest fan. I can’t remember what I said. I think I said “Thank you” or something.”

Fans on Reddit were in hysterics after learning of the exchange between the pair, with one writing:

“Palmer with a mic strikes again”

Another remarked:

“I hope they never give this man any sort of media training ever.”

One fan said:

“I love this lad lmao, so unbothered.”

Another wrote:

“Unintentionally the funniest guy in football.”

Palmer is enjoying time off following the Club World Cup and has visited Saint Kitts and Nevis, where his family originate from. His grandfather immigrated to England and the former Manchester City winger wears the Caribbean country’s flag on his boots in recognition of his roots.

He received a hero’s welcome after arriving in St Kitts and spoke about making the flight over from the United States:

“It’s important to come back to where your family is from. It’s nice to see how they grew up and their culture compared to ours… we were in America (for the Club World Cup) and it’s close. So we thought we’d just come over and see everything.”

Trump isn’t the only president to interact with Palmer since his Club World Cup exploits. St Kitts president Dr Terrance Drew also gave a glowing verdict of the Chelsea forward and what his visit to the country represented (via SB Nation):

“Cole Palmer’s visit to St. Kitts and Nevis is a powerful reminder of the strength and pride of our diaspora. His presence and mentorship will inspire the next generation to believe that global success is possible, no matter where you come from. We are proud to welcome him home and deeply grateful for his commitment to our young people and to the development of sports in our Federation.”

Palmer could return to the United States next year as part of the England squad who are eyeing World Cup glory. Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions boast a 100% record in their qualifying group after wins over Albania, Latvia and Andorra.

For now, he’ll be relaxing during much-deserved downtime ahead of pre-season friendlies in August against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan. He and the rest of Enzo Maresca’s squad will then undoubtedly have their sights on a possible Premier League title challenge.
