Professional wrestling has been around for decades, evolving from a trade performed at circuses to a global medium. A unique sport that differs from company to company, wrestling fans get a fix of all things entertainment and athletics when it comes to the sport.
With a plethora of companies for fans to tune into, most notably WWE, AEW, and NJPW, due to professional wrestling’s subjective nature and ever-changing depiction, it means the wrestlers who perform are hard to rank, with that lying in the eye of the beholder.
However, that being said, the top one percent of wrestlers manage to rise above the discourse and find themselves mentioned in certain topics more so than others. With names such as Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and John Cena remaining constants in the wrestling G.O.A.T. debate, the conversation around wrestling’s greatest factions is also dynamic.
With the help of AI, which has previously ranked the greatest wrestlers and tag teams, the 20 best factions in wrestling have been ranked. A list that contains a litany of fantastic groups, AI couldn’t find space for Suzuki-gun, The Wyatt Family, Sanity, and Aces & Eights; factions they consider honourable mentions.

Starting off the list, AI has chosen New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Chaos stable as the first entrant. A theme of factions in Japan is that they will chop and change entrants over the years, with Chaos being a constant and the members being interchangeable. That being said, the group has featured names such as Shinsuke Nakamura, who formed the faction, Kazuchika Okada, and Rocky Romero, just three from a list of immense Chaos members.
As AI states, they are one of NJPW’s longest-running and most stable factions. Furthermore, they helped launch Okada’s legendary run and solidified modern NJPW storytelling.

House of Black
|
Name: |
The House of Black |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
AEW |
|
Members: |
Malakai Black, Brody King, Buddy Matthews, Julia Hart |
Moving over to AEW, and it is a group with little history that ranks nineteenth. The House of Black, formed by Malakai Black, who now performs in the WWE under the name Aleister Black, featured Brody King, Buddy Matthews and Julia Hart. A quarter that seemed random, the chemistry was immense. It launched Hart to win the AEW TBS Championship, with the men’s contingent winning the AEW Trios Championships.
An eye-opening group with a unique vibe, their striking visuals and hard-hitting matches made them fan favourites. One of AEW’s most stylised and cohesive units, they still exist, just under the name Hounds of Hell.

Team Angle
|
Name: |
Team Angle |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
WWE |
|
Members: |
Kurt Angle, Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas |
Team Angle has had many incarnations over the years, following Kurt Angle wherever he worked. From the Main Event Mafia in TNA to Team RECK in WWF, Angle’s best group was The World’s Greatest Tag Team, consisting of Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas. The team matched Angle to perfection, wrestling with technical excellence and performing incredible tag matches.
The in-ring mastery and great storytelling during the SmackDown Six era of this group gave Kurt Angle a legitimate faction aura, as per AI.

The Nation of Domination
|
Name: |
The Nation of Domination |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
WWF |
|
Members: |
Faarooq, The Rock, Kama Mustafa, D’Lo Brown |
The Nation of Domination had a litany of members, but the original quartet was the group’s best phase. Spearheaded by leader Faarooq, it helped Rocky Maivia ease into the business, allowing him to grow into the megastar that would soon become The Rock.
Outside of their in-ring contributions and chemistry, this team had a more long-lasting effect on the business. Showcasing their cultural identity on WWE’s biggest platform was pivotal in diversifying character representation, something that has paved the way for many to succeed since.
16
The Brood
|
Name: |
The Brood |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
WWF |
|
Members: |
Gangrel, Edge and Christian |
Gangrel is somewhat of a cult-hero in the wrestling world, with his vampire gimmick adored by the masses. Forming The Brood with up-coming stars Edge and Christian, the trio gave off an irresistible aura, with their dark and, ironically, brooding depiction being a must-watch.
The entrance remains iconic, and although the group was short-lived, the impact is undeniable. Furthermore, this group provided Edge and Christian with a platform to showcase their potential, allowing them to go on and have Hall of Fame-worthy careers.

The Ministry of Darkness
|
Name: |
The Ministry of Darkness |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
WWF |
|
Members: |
The Undertaker, Bradshaw, Faarooq, Mideon, Viscera, Gangrel, Edge and Christian |
Moving on from The Brood, well, almost, The Ministry of Darkness carried a similar vibe, just a harsher and darker one. Featuring the aforementioned Brood trio, this group also had The Undertaker, Bradshaw and Faarooq, among many more members.
Platformed during the iconic Attitude Era, the gothic storytelling mixed with their corporate power made this a very unique experiment, but one that the WWE Universe will remember for a long time. Notably, at the centre of Vince McMahon’s Higher Power angle, luckily, this didn’t ruin the group’s legacy too much.
14
The Heenan Family
|
Name: |
The Heenan Family |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
WWF |
|
Members: |
Andre the Giant, Big John Studd, King Kong Bundy and more. |
The Heenan Family was a faction run by the legendary Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan. One of wrestling’s greatest managers, his work as part of the Heenan Family saw him work in AWA, GCW, NWA and the WWF, expanding his family wherever he went.
Having worked alongside a plethora of legends such as Ric Flair, Andre the Giant, and Harley Race, Heenan simply wanted to manage the best of the best and have those wrestlers in his stable. A simple, old-school stable, it was very effective, with some of the best wrestlers in history having sat under the learning tree of The Brain.
13
Imperium
|
Name: |
Imperium |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
WWE / NXT |
|
Members: |
WALTER, Marcel Barthel, Fabian Aichner, Alexander Wolfe |
The WWE Universe continues to be surprised that Imperium never worked out on the main roster, as their work in NXT was marvellous. A group run by WALTER, now known as Gunther, featured Marcel Barthel (now Ludwig Kaiser), Fabian Aichner, and Alexander Wolfe. The European faction prided itself on wrestling, declaring the ring to be sacred.
Settling for no less than excellence, they were a throwback group who didn’t run on storylines and drama, but whose soul motivation was to just be the best and beat anyone who came between them and their goal. Bringing credibility back to old-school wrestling, it is a shame it never connected with the masses.
12
The Dangerous Alliance
|
Name: |
The Dangerous Alliance |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
WCW / ECW |
|
Members: |
Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton, Rick Rude, Steve Austin and more. |
The Dangerous Alliance is a name that the WWE Universe are hearing more and more in recent times, with Paul Heyman’s most recent work with Seth Rollins, Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed being reminiscent of his work in this stable.
Another simply ran stable. Heyman’s idea for the Dangerous Alliance was to get the best of the best under one group. Taking the stable to WCW and ECW, Heyman scouted out the likes of Steve Austin, Rick Rude, Sabu, Taz and many more. The former Wiseman’s work was ahead of its time.
11
Undisputed Era
|
Name: |
The Undisputed Era |
|---|---|
|
Promotion(s): |
NXT |
|
Members: |
Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly, Bobby Fish, Roderick Strong |
During their prime, it could be argued that there was no group more popular than The Undisputed Era. Operating in NXT, when Triple H was at the helm, the group originally had Adam Cole, Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly, before Roderick Strong later joined the fold. Typically working as heels, they were hard to hate, with their coolness taking over.
At one moment in time, all four members of the Undisputed Era held gold in NXT, showing just how dominant they were. Even taking their talents to Survivor Series in 2019 and leaving as winners in their matches, it is a shame that the group disbanded before they had the chance to shine on the main roster, despite the fact that they still work together in AEW.
