Carlos Alcaraz’s security guards at this year’s Wimbledon have come under fire from tennis fans after footage of them went viral this week. The Spaniard is set to face Taylor Fritz on Friday afternoon in what will be his third consecutive appearance in the semi-finals of the showpiece event.
Should the 22-year-old be victorious, it would mark his 20th straight win at Wimbledon across three years, as he chases a third title in that same timeline. With that, discourse around his status as the current best tennis player has reached greater heights, especially after progressing past Fabio Fognini, Andrey Rublev, and Cameron Norrie with relative ease so far.
Unfortunately, his growing profile has also led to increased security in recent weeks, months, and even years. So much so that, during his quarter-final win on Centre Court on Tuesday, attention seemed to be focussed as much on his security team as on him.

Tennis spectators have scrutinised their power-drunk attitude
Footage on TikTok showing Alcaraz’s arrival ahead of his quarter-final match has gone viral this week for all the wrong reasons, as tennis viewers were quick to point out how self-important his team of eight bodyguards appeared while clearing the path for the star to make his way to Centre Court. Watch the full video below:
In reaction to the clip, one commentor wrote: “Is that really necessary? He’s only a tennis player,” while another remarked: “I just wouldn’t move. Who do they think they are?” Elsewhere, a third piece of criticism read:
“What an unnecessary, clumsy, inelegant way to move a person around Wimbledon. It’s a tennis game – not the United Nations. The culture of status and celebrity has gone too far.”
Another TikTok user said: “Who do they think they’re talking to? This isn’t a facist state, have some respect for the people that are paying to watch. Wimbledon you should be ashamed of these men, is this how you treat your guests? These men need removing from their jobs,” while a fifth concluded: “That’s not very Wimbledon.”
Clearly, many tennis viewers have been left disgruntled by the unusually heavy security presence surrounding Alcaraz, especially given that Wimbledon isn’t known for having a rowdy crowd, and the culture of celebrity is often frowned upon in a sport where greater success tends to invite greater scrutiny.
