According to a report from Foot Mercato, Montpellier HSC are close to agreeing a deal with SM Caen for Alexandre Mendy (31). The French outlet explains that the striker will arrive in the south of France in the next 48 hours to attend his medical.
This transfer looks to be a statement of intent for Montpellier, who will hope to earn promotion back to Ligue 1 at the first time of asking. Mendy has been a mainstay for Caen during their time in Ligue 2 and became the club’s record goalscorer last October.
Mendy had been promised an exit from Caen last summer, but a change of ownership scuppered a transfer to Sunderland AFC. The striker was loath to forget that the new owners, Kylian Mbappé’s investment fund, had reneged on a promise and was highly critical when assessing the club’s situation.
Speaking before Caen confirmed their relegation to the third tier of French football, Mendy told beIN Sports, “I’m speaking for myself, but when you start a new season with the wrong energy – everyone knows what happened during this transfer window for several players – this is what it looks like today… We only reap what we sow.”
