Not Elanga: Exclusive – Newcastle Working on ‘Significant’ Deal

Newcastle United are keen to discover whether it will be possible to sign Giorgio Scalvini after the Atalanta star has worked his way onto head coach Eddie Howe’s radar as he goes in search of improving his defensive options at St James’ Park ahead of the upcoming season, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

Although the Magpies are advancing in their attempts to bring in attacking reinforcements, with Anthony Elanga edging closer to joining for £55million from Premier League counterparts Nottingham Forest, the Magpies are in the market for more solidity as preparations are made for an opening day trip to Aston Villa next month.

Lloyd Kelly has completed a permanent switch to Juventus since the end of the 2024/25 campaign, with the Italian giants forking out £20million after an initial loan spell, and Newcastle are threatening to raid Serie A rivals Atalanta after setting their sights on making Scalvini a fresh presence at the heart of the backline.

Newcastle are looking into the possibility of being able to strike a deal for Scalvini, according to GMS sources, after Howe has tasked recruitment staff with turning their attention towards acquiring a significant centre-back name after completing the signing of Elanga and another attacker in the coming weeks.

The Magpies have pinpointed the eight-cap Italy international as a long-term replacement for current fan favourites Dan Burn and Fabian Schar, who have entered the final years of their respective careers at the top level, leading to there being hope that they will be able to reach an agreement in the region of £30million.

GMS sources have been informed that Newcastle are determined to find out whether a deal would be feasible after Scalvini, who was limited to just eight appearances in all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign thanks to injuries, has become a leading target as preparations are made for a season which will include Champions League action.

The 21-year-old has been described as ‘world-class’ by scout Jacek Kulig and, with there being a desire behind the scenes to show ambition in the transfer market, the Magpies are contemplating whether to test Atalanta’s resolve by lodging a formal bid for his signature after making attacking acquisitions.

Newcastle are determined to ensure they enjoy a productive transfer window despite being forced to contend with a slow start, GMS sources have learned, and Scalvini is on their wishlist as they continue surveying the market despite closing in on the arrival of Elanga from Nottingham Forest.

GMS sources have been told that Newcastle have already decided that their next priority will be to recruit a central defender after bolstering their attacking options, leading to Scalvini being pinpointed as a possible recruit even though injuries limited his amount of game time during the 2024/25 campaign.

Although Serie A side Atalanta have insisted that they will do all they can to keep the 2024 Europa League winner out of the Magpies’ clutches this summer, the Tyneside giants are still circling and weighing up whether to pounce at the same time as earmarking alternative targets.

Newcastle could make an approach for Marseille’s Leonardo Balerdi after fellow suitors Juventus baulked at his price tag, GMS sources understand, while they have not totally given up on landing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi even though they are facing stiff competition for an agreement.
