USA vs Costa Rica Predicted Starting Lineups for Gold Cup Quarterfinal

United States Soccer continues its Concacaf Gold Cup journey with a trip to Minnesota to take on Costa Rica Football in what’s shaping up to be a tantalizing quarterfinal matchup.

The USMNT breezed through the group stage, winning three games out of three and topping Group D with a perfect nine points. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad kicked off their tournament with an impressive 5-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago, before beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 and Haiti 2-1.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, finished second in Group A, tied on seven points with Mexico but losing the tie-breaker on goal differential. Los Ticos beat Suriname 4-3 and the Dominican Republic 2-1 before settling for a scoreless draw with Mexico to close out the group stage.

The USA and Costa Rica have played each other on 20 previous occasions, with the Americans winning 10 of those meetings. Costa Rica has beaten their Central American rivals eight times, and the nations have settled for two ties.

Their last meeting came in January 2025 friendly, when the US comfortably won 3-0 thanks to goals from Brian White, Caden Clark and Patrick Agyemang.

Keylor Navas, Costa Rica’s 38-year-old goalkeeper and national team captain, will once again lead his country out on Sunday in what will be his 121st cap.

Manfred Ugalde has been Costa Rica’s standout player so far this tournament, scoring a team-high three goals in the group stage (all of which were penalties). He’s expected to be among the starters once again on Sunday, joining New York City FC‘s Alonso Martinez in attack.

Pochettino could trot out a lineup similar to the one that defeated Haiti on Matchday 3 of the group stage.

Alex Freeman and John Tolkin are expected to start as the full-backs, with Chris Richards and Tim Ream manning the middle of defense. Captain Tyler Adams and Luca de la Torre have been good as a double-pivot in midfield, and should be there again on Sunday.

Malik Tillman has been brilliant for the US this tournament, scoring three goals and now nearing a deal to join German giants Bayer Leverkusen, according to GIVEMESPORT’s Tom Bogert.

Patrick Agyemang has also been good in this Gold Cup, scoring two goals so far as Pochettino’s preferred striker.
