Man Utd Plotting Move For Player Who Shone vs PSG at Club World Cup

Manchester United have been making some very shrewd moves in this summer’s transfer market. The Red Devils knew they had to strengthen after an extremely poor 2024/25 season which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League and without any silverware.

United have made one of the biggest moves of the transfer window so far after they completed the signing of Matheus Cunha in a £62.5m move from Wolverhampton Wanderers. They also appear to have won the race for Brentford’s Bryan Mbuemo, who is poised to sign for the club in a deal worth more than £60m.

While Cunha and Mbuemo are both superb players who will no doubt make United a better side, the 20-time English champions need to strengthen further if they want to return to past glories.

One area that Man United could still strengthen this summer is in goal. United thought they had solved their goalkeeper issues in 2023 when they signed Andre Onana in a mega-money move from Inter Milan. However, the Cameroonian goalkeeper has flattered to deceive in his opening two seasons at the club and could well leave this summer, with Monaco among the clubs interested.

Amid Onana’s struggles, it’s now been revealed that the Red Devils are now plotting a move for one of the best-performing goalkeepers at this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup. According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, United are keen to sign Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor. United are said to have a long-term interest in John and scouts have been watching him very closely at this summer’s tournament, where he has been very impressive.

Botafago were placed in a very tough group alongside Atletico Madrid, PSG and Seattle Sounders, but the Brazilian side were able to qualify for the last 16 largely thanks to John’s brilliance in goal.

The 29-year-old conceded just twice in Botafago’s three group matches, and kept a clean sheet in his side’s shock 1-0 victory over Champions League winners PSG. With that clean sheet, John became only the second player to shutout the French outfit this year after Liverpool’s Alisson Becker. View his highlights from that match below:

According to John’s representative, Pedro Gutierrez, he was the subject of interest from multiple European clubs in the winter, but a deal was never reached. He could well make a move after the Club World Cup, though, and it has been reported the Brazilian’s preference is to play in the Premier League.

John is believed to be available at a bargain price, with a release clause of just £5.8m in his contract. Given how little he would cost, and how well he has performed in the United States, it wouldn’t be a surprise if United had serious competition for his signature this summer.
