Over the years, the arrival of more and more recognisable faces has helped Major League Soccer (MLS) grow in popularity. David Beckham broke ground when he moved to LA Galaxy in 2007, but more stars have since taken their talents to the United States. It was once considered somewhere where the elite would go to see out the final years of their careers, but these days, there’s an exciting crop of players plying their trade throughout the league.
Lionel Messi’s arrival in 2023 sparked major change and MLS is bigger than ever right now. With more fans watching than ever before, jersey sales are also on the rise. A recent report revealed the 25 most popular jerseys in MLS this year in terms of shirt sales and while there are some obvious candidates near the top, a couple of surprising names also feature on the list.

Ashley Westwood is outselling some recognisable names
Kicking off the top 25 are a pair of Seattle Sounders stars in Jesús Ferreira and Albert Rusnák. They’re joined by Inter Miami’s Benjamin Cremaschi, who joined the Florida-based franchise as a youth player in 2021 and has risen through the ranks for his hometown side.
Some notable figures featured in this section include Christian Benteke. The striker spent the majority of his career in the Premier League, representing the likes of Aston Villa, Liverpool and Crystal Palace. He’s found a home in D.C. United, though, and has proven quite popular. He’s not the only star that made a name for himself on an elite stage, however.
Former Chelsea star Olivier Giroud, Borussia Dortmund icon Marco Reus and Barcelona hero Sergio Busquets are all also included in the top 25, but fail to make it into the top 10 despite their pedigree. Interestingly, forgotten Englishman Ashley Westwood is actually outselling them all right now. The midfielder made a name for himself at Burnley, but moved to Charlotte FC in 2023 and has been a hit. Only 10 players in MLS right now are selling more shirts than the 35-year-old.

Lionel Messi is leading the pack
There are no prizes for anyone who predicted that Lionel Messi would have the top-selling shirt in MLS this year. The Argentine is one of the greatest footballers ever and is loved all over the planet. His move to Inter Miami sparked a frenzy and the club is more popular than it’s ever been before. He’s largely responsible for that, so it’s only fitting that he’s selling more shirts than anyone else in the league and it’s probably not even close.
Behind him in second, though, is his Inter Miami teammate, Luis Suarez. The two achieved great things together at Barcelona and reuinited in Florida last year. Suarez is a huge name across the globe and fans have flocked to buy his shirt following his arrival. Other notable names in the top 10 include Miguel Almiron, who only recently returned to Atlanta United after a six-year stint with Newcastle United. His form hasn’t been the best since heading back to the States, but he’s still very popular.
Wilfried Zaha can also be found in the top 10, with his Charlotte FC shirt being the seventh-highest selling across the entire league. As a Crystal Palace legend, the forward torched defenders for years in the Premier League and has brought his exciting style of play Stateside and fans are loving him for it.
