Liverpool are showing interest in a surprise summer move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana and could soon make an initial offer, according to L’Equipe journalist Hugo Guillemet.
The Premier League winners are believed to have recently made contact with the Belgium international’s representatives as they look to bolster Arne Slot’s attacking options with a new addition.
The Reds have been active in the transfer window so far, having signed defender Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, and are on the verge of completing two more blockbuster deals.
Frimpong’s former teammate Florian Wirtz is set to join this week in a club-record £116m deal, while Bournemouth full-back Milos Kerkez is also expected to follow, having agreed personal terms last month.
Liverpool Eyeing Malick Fofana
Lyon are in no rush to sell the 20-year-old winger
According to L’Equipe, Fofana has received enquiries from both Chelsea and Liverpool in recent days, while Manchester United are also believed to be interested in the 20-year-old winger, who has previously expressed a desire to move to Anfield.
Lyon are said to be demanding in excess of €50m (£42m) for Fofana this summer and are in no rush to part ways, having already sold star attacker Rayan Cherki to Manchester City for £34m earlier this month.
Fofana, who joined Lyon from Belgian side Gent last year, impressed in his debut season in France, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.
The ‘unbelievable’ winger also netted six times in 10 Europa League appearances, where Lyon were knocked out by Manchester United in the quarter-finals in April.
Liverpool are expected to strengthen their front line further following the signing of Wirtz, with a new number nine also high on the agenda.
The Reds are likely to replace striker Darwin Nunez this summer, amid interest from Serie A winners Napoli and clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
