Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League opener against Inter on Wednesday evening, head coach Julian Nagelsmann opened up on Bayern’s chances in the competition as well as the threat that their opponents pose.
“Inter are very experienced,” Nagelsmann told reporters. “They have a very good coach and a lot of individual quality. Romelu Lukaku is injured but Edin Dzeko came in against Milan. He also has a lot of experience. I assume that they will be deep and will give us little space.”
Nagelsmann also expects leadership from summer arrival Sadio Mané despite his quiet demeanour: “I expect Sadio to bring his experience, to score, assist and lead by example,” added Nagelsmann. “He’s not a loud speaker but he has good character and can lead the group.”
Although Leon Goretzka travelled to Milan, Marcel Sabitzer is expected to start alongside Joshua Kimmich as the former returns from injury. Sabitzer has impressed after a disappointing first season, something that Nagelsmann noted in his presser.
“He’s doing very well,” added Nagelsmann. “Against Union he was our best player. He’s clever in tackling and in possession. He’s having a very good season.”
