Despite being the greatest fighter of all time to the large majority of MMA fans, fighters and analysts, Jon Jones is rapidly destroying his reputation for his current stance on a potential UFC heavyweight title unification bout against the division’s interim champion, Tom Aspinall.
Although ‘Bones’ has held the UFC heavyweight strap for almost two and a half years, he has defended it just once, and that defence came against Stipe Miocic, who, admittedly, is the best heavyweight the UFC has ever seen, but when that fight took place, Miocic was 42 years old and hadn’t competed in over three and a half years. It is not just Jones’ inactivity which is holding the heavyweight division up, it is his refusal to fight Aspinall.
Following Jones’ recent antics on social media, where he has essentially been trolling the entire MMA community, many MMA figures, including active fighters, have come out to speak against the heavyweight champion’s actions, the latest being the current UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski. Although Volkanovski is viewed as one of the nicest and most respectful fighters ever, even he has grown tired of the games from ‘Bones.’

Alexander Volkanovski Has Urged Jon Jones to Retire
Volkanovski says Jones is holding up the UFC heavyweight division
Jon Jones’ antics holding up the UFC heavyweight division and refusing to fight Tom Aspinall have gone on for so long that they are now starting to agitate even the nicest and most patient of UFC stars. During a recent appearance on the Overdogs Podcast, the current UFC featherweight champion, Volkanovski, urged ‘Bones’ to retire to stop the heavyweight division from being held up for much longer.
Volkanovski said the following on the Overdogs Podcast:
“Don’t hold up the division. I know your resume is incredible. You’re considered the greatest of all time. So if you don’t want to fight, just retire, you’re done.”
Although Jones’ antics and stance on a potential fight against Aspinall are clearly wrong and having a negative impact on the UFC, he still has his defenders, however, Volkanovski has hit back at those people as well, saying what he is doing isn’t fine at all, and it’s his responsibility as the champion to defend the belt.
“If you’re the champ, you defend your belt. It’s a responsibility. You can’t just sit out.
You need to be reasonably active. You need to fight whoever’s there. If you’ve got an interim champ, that’s a no-brainer. I don’t want to throw heaps of shade, but look, I know he’s proved himself, everyone’s like, ‘Look what he’s done, it’s fine.’ No, not really.”
UFC president Dana White spoke at last week’s UFC 316 post-fight press conference and claimed they would resolve the situation between Jones and Aspinall on the following Tuesday, however, there still seems to have been zero progress made, which means ‘Bones’ may be done with MMA for good.
