Football never sleeps. During any of the 86400 seconds in a 24-hour day, somewhere in the world someone is doing something related to the beautiful game, whether that’s scoring a last-minute winner in a high-profile match, posting their expert take on social media or simply booting a ball against a wall with their mates.
It’s therefore impossible for any human being to keep up with everything that’s going on in the game, and it’s often those little yet most intriguing moments, like a fan’s alternative viewpoint of a penalty save, or a three-second yet incredibly telling interaction between two arch-rivals, or thread on X explaining why N’Golo Kante is the nicest man in professional sport, which make football so great.
GIVEMESPORT have created our live blog to help solve that problem, providing the best social media has to offer and the greatest football mini-stories from the last 24 hours.
9th June: Lamine Yamal Accused of ‘Disrespecting’ Cristiano Ronaldo
Youngster didn’t look at Ronaldo while shaking his hand
Lamine Yamal has been accused of ‘disrespecting’ Cristiano Ronaldo in the aftermath of Sunday’s Nations League final, which saw Portugal defeat Spain on penalties. The 17-year-old, who is currently the second-favourite to win the Ballon d’Or award following a remarkable season with Barcelona, has already been criticised on social media for walking off while Spain’s players lifted the Nations League trophy.
Now, another video of Lamine Yamal is going viral on social media, showing the teenager turning his head away while shaking hands with Ronaldo, who has since cast his verdict on the youngster’s future prospects in the game. “Arrogant and unprofessional,” wrote one fan on X, while another commented: “Such a sore loser”. A third commented: “This is getting too much. Wtf is this behaviour?”.
It should be noted, though, that Lamine Yamal is still very young. Because of how good he is, it’s easy to forget this is a young man who doesn’t turn 18 until July. It’s inevitable that he’ll make the odd mistake here and there.
8th June: Fans Claim that Wirtz ‘Destroyed’ Cherki in Germany v France Nations League Tie
The Frenchman got his payback just moments later
Liverpool-bound Florian Wirtz and Rayan Cherki, who is poised to move to Manchester City this summer, locked horns in the UEFA Nations’ League third-place play-off – and the Anfield faithful are relishing the fact that Wirtz left Cherki for dead in the first half.
Both players are expected to play in England’s top flight next season – and supporters of the respective sides are already looking to one-up one another ahead of 2025/26 and it seems that Liverpool fans have already got the first laugh.
Cherki of France had the ball in possession on the right-hand side before being dispossessed by Wirtz, who intercepted his pass to his French compatriot. In an attempt to win the ball back, Cherki closed him down but the Bayer Leverkusen star seamlessly danced round him. (Watch it, in full, above).
In a sort of tit-for-tat fashion, fans were quick to point out Cherki got his own back just moments later by passing the ball through Wirtz’s legs. If this is a sign of things to come, Liverpool’s meetings with Manchester City next season are going to be fun.
6th June: Alan Shearer Responds to Ange Postecoglou Spurs Sacking
The former Newcastle striker has made his feelings clear
Alan Shearer has criticised Tottenham’s decision to sack Ange Postecoglou after the Australian coach guided them to their first piece of silverware in 17 years. It was announced on Friday that Postecoglou had been relieved of his duties in North London, having first arrived at the club in 2023.
While Spurs’ Premier League form was atrocious and saw them finish one place above the relegation zone, the former Celtic boss delivered on his promise to bring a trophy to the club in his second season by guiding them to Europa League glory, thus allowing them to qualify for the Champions League.
In response to the sacking, Shearer appeared to show solidarity with Postecoglou, taking to X to write: “What a stupid game football is!!!!”
His reaction caused a big stir online with hundreds of fans reacting, offering differing opinions on the matter.
5th June: Wirtz’s Response to Liverpool Question Has Fans Talking
The German was asked about move to Anfield
One of the biggest transfer stories this summer already is Florian Wirtz and his potential move to Liverpool. The Bayer Leverkusen man has been shining in Germany with the club and has made his way onto the radar of a number of top sides. The Reds are expected to be the ones who land him this summer, though, and those beliefs have only strengthened after a video surfaced on social media.
The star was caught on camera leaving after Germany’s 2-1 loss to Portugal on Wednesday night. He was asked whether he was excited about moving to Liverpool and his response has left fans excited online. The attacking midfielder turned towards the man who asked the question and nodded at him before swiftly leaving. While he didn’t give too much away, his response has been taken as indication that the move is definitely on the cards.
One fan took to X (Twitter) and said: “That’s how I would acknowledge the question it’s confirmation to me.”
3rd June: Thuram’s Reaction to Clapping for PSG Goes Viral
Kylian Mbappe found the interaction on France duty hilarious
Just days after losing the Champions League final 5-0 to Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram linked up with the French side’s talisman, Ousmane Dembele, and the striker’s reaction has gone viral after the winner received a round of applause from his compatriots who had been called up.
France boss Didier Deschamps asked his squad to congratulate Dembele on his wonderful achievement at club level – but Thuram, on the receiving end of the defeat, was less than impressed. Sat next to the former Barcelona man, he remained straight-faced but obliged with the clapping.
Kylian Mbappe, previously PSG’s go-to man before moving to Real Madrid in the summer of 2024, couldn’t help but laugh at Thuram for his reaction to Deschamps’ plea. “Marcus! Look at Marcus!” the Los Blancos frontman said with a grin from ear to ear across his face. Thuram, as expected, remained less than impressed.
2nd June: Viktor Gyokeres Drops Massive Hint About Summer Transfer
Was speaking to former teammate Leo Ostigard
One of the key transfer sagas that seems destined to be solved this summer is the future of Viktor Gyokeres. The Sporting CP striker has scored goal after goal in Portugal, leading to interest from a series of big clubs.
Premier League teams Arsenal and Manchester United appear to be two of the most likely destinations, and Gyokeres was asked about joining the Gunners recently. Was speaking to former teammate Leo Ostigard, the striker claimed, “nobody knows anything yet.”
However, when Ostigard said: “Viktor, great talking to you. Text me when everything is signed and sorted at Arsenal…” Gyokeres tellingly replied: “Yeah, yeah, sure!”
31st May: Antony Delivers Emotional Message to Real Betis
He penned the letter on social media ahead of his Man United return
After struggling at Manchester United, Antony’s loan move to Real Betis earlier this year reignited his career. He rediscovered his form with the Spanish side and was electric throughout the last few months of the 2024/25 season as Betis reached the Europa Conference League final.
With the campaign now in the books, though, it’s almost time for him to return to his parent club and swap the Villamarin Stadium for Old Trafford. His departure from Betis is one that’s going to hit fans and the Brazilian hard and he’s posted an emotional message to the club on social media ahead of his exit.
On Instagram, as quoted by ESPN, he posted:
“Today is the day to thank one of the most beautiful chapters of my life. From the first step into this club, I felt something different. It was like coming home, like finding a piece of myself that I thought I had lost. With you, I started to smile again.
“Thank you for welcoming me as one of your own. Thank you for giving me back the joy of playing football. And thank you for reminding me why I fell in love with the game. My home, my people, thank you so much.”
31st May: Bruno Fernandes’ Exchange With Man Utd Fan
The video has gone viral amid rumours he could leave this summer
Bruno Fernandes may well have played his final game for Manchester United. Fernandes has been superb for the Red Devils over the years but, despite another impressive campaign for the club, it has been reported that United have put every single one of their players up for sale.
The Portuguese midfielder has been attracting strong interest from Saudi Arabia, with Fernandes believed to be ‘seriously considering’ a move after his agent held talks with Al-Hilal. However, despite the exit rumours, Fernandes has given his word to a United fan that he will not depart the club this summer. Whether he is true to his word remains to be seen, but the video is positive for United fans around the world, who will be desperate not to lose their talisman.
30th May: Bruno Fernandes’ Mario Balotelli Impression in Man Utd Friendly
Fans aren’t happy
While most other clubs are enjoying a well-earned break, Manchester United have jetted off to Asia on a post-season tour. They took on Hong Kong today and came away with a 3-1 win. However, the Red Devils actually trailed at the start.
Showing how little he felt of the occasion, when put through on goal, captain Bruno Fernandes attempted a rabona shot but saw his effort saved. Losing 1-0 at the stage, it wasn’t the wisest decision and evoked memories of Mario Balotelli, who once attempted a similar effort in a pre-season game, much to Roberto Mancini’s fury, as he immediately hooked the Manchester City star.
Many fans weren’t happy with Fernandes. One said: “Not even pub standard & he’s the captain, the poorest skipper ever in my eyes.” Another wrote: “Ah man, the level of arrogance from a team that finished 16th.” A third said: “Get rid of Bruno ASAP.” A final fan said: “Wow. Balotelli got hooked for this kind of stuff. United captain”
Highlighting the similarities, one fan simply posted a GIF of Balotelli’s infamous effort:
