Mikel Arteta has explained reasons to sign ‘fighter’ Serge Gnabry amid Arsenal transfer links

Serge Gnabry has been linked with a return to Arsenal in the near future, a move that has captured the imagination of supporters. The Germany international’s deal only has one-year remaining at Bayern Munich, putting doubt over his future at the club.

It comes ahead of a huge summer for Mikel Arteta after his side finished fifth in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League football. The Spaniard will be hoping his side can go one further next campaign.

In order to do that, the manager may have to look towards the transfer market for reinforcements to his squad. Discussing his plans, Arteta said: “We are going to have certain resources, not unlimited resources, some resources.

“And with our resources we have to play and do what we have to do in the best possible way.” According to reports, Gnabry could be available for as little as €40million (£34million), meaning that could be an efficient use of said resources.

The 26-year-old has spent five-years in Bavaria, making 171 appearances and scoring 64 goals and 40 assists in that time. He has also managed to rack up twelve trophies since joining, showing his successful transformation since leaving the Emirates.

And, amid reports linking him with a return, Arteta has already outlined his reasons for potentially signing him. Back in his playing days, he was full of plaudits for the forward, saying: “He’s [Gnabry] like a little boxer, he’s a little fighter.

“He’s good. He’s got a lot of character as well, the lad doesn’t get intimidated either because it’s a derby. His character is great. You see it in training.

“Technically, he is very good but he’s got something about him as well. He doesn’t mind when he gets kicked, he gets up and goes for the next ball. He’s quite brave.”
