Eyewitness Reveals What Actually Caused Fatal British Superbike Crash

During the British Superbike event on Monday, a tragic crash resulted in the deaths of two riders. A statement revealed that Owen Jenner, 21, and Shane Richardson, 29, lost their lives in a multi-rider incident at Oulton Park in Cheshire, which led to 11 other riders crashing as well.

Following the crash, a pile-up occurred, and one of the bikes caught fire, prompting medics to rush onto the track. Consequently, the event was called off. Jenner was taken to the medical centre at the circuit, where resuscitation efforts were ongoing, but he tragically succumbed to a “catastrophic head injury,” according to the organisers.

Richardson, meanwhile, suffered from “severe chest injuries” and was treated on-site, but died on his way to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, Jay Borrett, 53, from Rochester in Kent, attended the event alongside his wife Debbie, and he has given his first-hand account of what happened and what went down after the tragedy.

Borrett praised the fast-responding medical team, saying: “The emergency response was incredibly quick. We saw two helicopters. You can’t fault the response time. The services they have here are amazing, the orange army.”

Borrett then explained the moment the crash took place and was vocal about how the competitive nature of the sport can lead to dangerous situations.

He said: “I watched them all run up the hill to the scene of the crash. You’ve got people at the top of their game racing beside somebody else who’s at the top of their game, for the same bit of track.  If he can’t win, at least he wants to beat the one in front of him. Everyone knows the risks.

“Proper fans appreciate everything they do. It’s devastating, but the sport will carry on, things are not going to change.

“This was nothing to do with the size of the track, or anything like that.  It was just a spin up of the back wheel which put him into a sideways position, and then a domino effect putting him into everyone else. It was an accident, and accidents happen. He was going into a pack of bikes, and there’s no retrieving that.”

The couple attended the event as they were staying in their caravan at the Oulton Park campsite, close to the first bend where the crash occurred on the first circuit.

Jay’s wife, Debbie Borrett, said: “Everyone here was devastated. We’re all huge superbike fans and these are very safe tracks. The riders know the risks every time they go out there. The fans understand and appreciate the risks they take. The riders were so young. It’s a tragedy.”

Another spectator in attendance for the race was Russell Mather, a 64-year-old from Dukinfield, Greater Manchester. He said: “Nobody gets on a bike to go and kill somebody – accidents happen, it’s two riders slightly touching, fighting, because they’re three or four abreast and coming down to a bend it only needs two just to touch.”
