Borussia Mönchengladbach have this afternoon confirmed the signing of Germany international midfielder Julian Weigl (26) on loan from Benfica for the 2022/23 season.
“Julian is a ball player and a strong player,” said BMG sporting director Roland Virkus. “He has a lot of Bundesliga experience and footballing quality and will certainly be able to help our team quickly.”
After weeks of negotiations, head coach Daniel Farke and Virkus have secured their desired player for the No. 6 role. Borussia and Weigl had an agreement for some time but Benfica had a preference to sell the former Borussia Dortmund player but because of Die Fohlen’s financial situation, were unable to meet SLB’s valuation.
Weigl returns to the Bundesliga after playing 171 games across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund between 2015 and 2020 before leaving for Benfica, where he played 115 games.
Farke’s Borussia Mönchengladbach are currently one of four teams still unbeaten in this season’s Bundesliga after four games.
