Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte wants a different type of player to provide support at right wing-back, rather than summer signing Djed Spence, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
Conte has overseen a busy few months of business at Hotspur Way but still has time to add to his squad ahead of the 11pm deadline tonight.
What is the latest Tottenham transfer news?
Spence only completed his transfer from Middlesbrough this summer in a £20 million deal but could soon find himself bumped even further down the pecking order.
According to The Telegraph, Spurs are interested in a shock transfer for Leeds United winger Dan James, as they look to provide Emerson Royal with competition on the right side of the pitch.
The report says that Spurs turned to the Wales international after missing out in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Yannick Carrasco, despite the Belgian being open to a Premier League switch.
Aston Villa are understood to be plotting a deadline day swoop for Spurs winger Lucas Moura, which could free up space for James’ arrival.
However, Fulham are rivalling Spurs for the signature of the former Manchester United star ahead of the deadline.
Meanwhile, journalist Simon Phillips has informed GiveMeSport that Chelsea also hold a shock interest in signing James.
What has Jones said on Tottenham’s plans?
Jones understands that Conte wants to strengthen his options at right wing-back as he seeks a different type of player to Spence.
The transfer insider says that James has been targeted with the intent of playing him in that role moving forward.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Antonio Conte is looking for something a bit different, a certain profile of player that is going to fill this gap. You wouldn’t think that Dan James would be signing for Tottenham as a right-sided wing-back, but actually, that would be what they’re looking at here.”
What does this mean for Spence?
It has not been a great start to life in north London for Spence.
Last season saw him shoot to stardom for Nottingham Forest as he helped Steve Cooper’s side win promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.
The 22-year-old scored three goals and provided five assists, and caught the eye of Tottenham in the process.
However, in the first four Premier League games of the season, he has played just one minute of football, coming on as a late substitute on his return to Forest.
He was even left out of the matchday squads entirely for clashes with Chelsea and Wolves, indicating that Conte does not feel he is ready for action.
