Why Chris Eubank Jr Was Taken to Hospital After Conor Benn Win

Chris Eubank Jr was taken to hospital after his grueling Fight of the Year victory over Conor Benn at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, on Saturday, the 26th of April.

Eubank defeated Benn by unanimous decision, with three scores of 116-112 from the ringside judges, after a Fight Week filled with bad blood — a rivalry that goes back a generation, after Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn fought twice in one of British boxing’s fiercest series of fights.

To settle the disparity in weight, the fighters agreed to a bout at 160 pounds — the middleweight limit — with a 10-pound rehydration limit on the day of the match. Eubank struggled to make the weight, had to forfeit a $500,000 sum, and, much to the concern of prominent international figures in the combat sports community, appeared gaunt on Friday.

Shortly after the opening bell, those concerns were laid to rest as Eubank was asserted an authority by virtue of a counter-punch strategy that made Benn’s wilder aggression second-best.

Coming up to middleweight from welterweight, Benn proved to retain his power as he opened a cut on Eubank by the ninth round — but it was not the only injury he caused.

Why Chris Eubank Jr Was Taken to Hospital

Though he won, Eubank had to go to hospital shortly after the final bell

Perhaps what made Eubank’s victory even more impressive was that he out-performed Benn despite suffering a broken jaw for which he was taken to hospital after scores were announced, and the result was official.

It is currently unclear which of Benn’s punches caused the damage. However, there was a clear difference in power as Benn landed 180 significant shots compared to Eubank’s 227. Overall, Eubank landed more punches with 367 from 912 thrown, compared to Benn’s 215 from 593.

Despite the damage, and the injuries, Eubank seemed unfazed.

“I knew I was capable of that. I just needed someone to bring that out of me.”

Considering the epic nature of the fight, which is surely a leading contender for Fight of the Year, together with the commercial success of the show as 67,484 people attended the home ground of EPL team Tottenham Hotspur, there may well be a rematch.

Eubank, though, may well have secured himself superstar status in Britain by virtue of the win, heightening his chance to either lure Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to England for a fight at Wembley Stadium, or fight him in one of his key US markets like Las Vegas, or Arlington, Texas.

Eubank and Canelo have been linked with one another for years, and leading boxing powerbroker, Turki Alalshikh, seems interested in seeing that fight as one of four bouts he agreed with the Mexican pound-for-pound fighter.
