Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been dropped from the Man United squad to face Newcastle.
This comes after his horrible performance against Lyon in the midweek, where he was responsible for both the goal United conceded during the 2-2 draw in the Europa League.
The first goal was conceded from a needless free-kick given away by Noussair Mazraoui. Almada stepped up to take the set-piece and whipped in a delivery that floated over everyone and nestled into the back of the net, catching Onana completely off-guard.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing it to bounce into the far corner—a goal that looked entirely preventable.
United got back into the game right before half-time and ended up taking a 2-1 lead in the 88th minute. And they were minutes way from coming out as winners but Rayan Cherki scored the equaliser in the 95th minute, a clever finish from close range after Onana parried away a shot straight onto him.
The costly errors became the talking point of the game, specially after the pre-game war of words between Nemanja Matic and Onana. Matic called Onana one of the worst goalkeeper in Man United’s history in response to Onana saying that United are better than Lyon.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper was then quick to clarify that he did not mean any disrespect to Lyon before biting back at Matic, boasting the silverware that he won with the Red Devils, something Matic failed to do during his stint at the the club.
Andre Onana dropped by Ruben Amorim
According to the BBC, Ruben Amorim has now dropped the keeper for the game against the Magpies to allow him to “rest and disconnect”.
It is said that the rest is temporary and that he is contention to return to the team for the second leg against Lyon.
Turkish international Altay Bayindir is set to start in place of the 29-year-old and has a chance to force himself into the starting XI if he can take his chance.
Onana joined Man United from Inter after a fantastic season with the Serie A club, but has failed to live up to his reputation at Old Trafford.
Since the start of last season, he has made 8 errors resulting in goals, the most from any keeper in the Premier League.
It remains to be seen whether Ruben Amorim keeps him at the club beyond this summer or if he becomes part of the mass exodus.
