Tottenham make decision on Cristian Romero’s future at the club

Tottenham Hotspur are heading into a decisive summer transfer window, with several important calls to be made regarding the squad’s future.

One of the biggest uncertainties surrounds vice-captain Cristian Romero, whose long-term future at the club is now under question.

Tottenham to give Cristian Romero an ultimatum

As reported by GiveMeSport, Spurs have made the decision to sell Romero if he does not commit to a new contract before the transfer window opens.

The Argentine centre-back, whose current deal runs until 2027, has been on Real Madrid’s radar for some time, with the Spanish giants viewing him as a key addition to their defensive setup.

As per the report, Tottenham’s management is set to put pressure on Romero to sign an extension or face the possibility of being sold. With Madrid closely monitoring the situation, Spurs know they could receive a considerable offer if they opt to let him go.

While they are keen on convincing the player to stay and are willing to make him their highest-paid player, they will not wait around forever.

Romero’s growing discontent reportedly stems from his desire to play in the Champions League consistently—something he has not been able to achieve with Spurs despite being a World Cup-winning defender with Argentina in 2022.

Currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, Tottenham’s hopes of securing European football through the league have all but faded. Their only realistic path to continental competition next season is by winning the Europa League, a tough challenge considering their inconsistent performances.

Since arriving at Tottenham in 2021 from Atalanta—initially on loan before making the move permanent—Romero has been a key figure in the defence. Ahead of the 2023–24 season, he was appointed vice-captain, and Ange Postecoglou has often highlighted his leadership qualities and defensive solidity. However, a lengthy hamstring injury has hindered his impact this season.

Romero admits Tottenham players are not happy

He was back in the line-up during their 2-0 defeat to Fulham and after the game, he put up an Instagram post, revealing that the players are unhappy with the current situation.

Taking to his social media, Romero said:

“We’re not happy with our current situation, but this group will always stand up and take responsibility for everything that happens at the club.

“Let’s all continue to stand together. Once again, fans, thank you for always being there @spursofficial.”

If Romero leaves, Tottenham will use the funds from his sale to reinforce their squad. His future remains uncertain, and the coming months will determine whether he stays to help rebuild or seeks a fresh challenge elsewhere.
