Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund can only complete the permanent signing of on-loan Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka if they qualify for Europe.
After joining on loan in January, the midfielder has struggled with knee issues, but when he has played he has impressed. Chukwuemeka made his Bundesliga debut at the weekend in Dortmund’s 6-0 win against Union Berlin with a strong cameo. His performances could even hand him a start against St Pauli next weekend due to the poor performances of Julian Brandt and Giovanni Reyna.
The straight loan includes a buy option worth €35m. If the 20-year-old continues to impress during his six-month spell at the Signal Iduna Park, then Dortmund could activate the purchases option. However, this is only possible if Dortmund qualifies for Europe this season.
This is a similar model to how they signed Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen on loan last January. Despite the pair playing well during their time in Germany, Dortmund were unable to sign either permanently.
Dortmund are currently 10th in the Bundesliga and are six points off of the European places.
