Speaking after Benfica’s 3-0 win against Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League, head coach Roger Schmidt has hinted that Julian Weigl could leave the Portuguese club this summer.
“There might be an opportunity for him to change clubs. At the end of the day, it’s his decision,” Schmidt told Prime Video, via FussballTransfers. “We’ll see what happens in the next two weeks.”
Borussia Mönchengladbach are leading the race to sign Weigl (26), who can leave for a fee between €15m and €20m. However with the deadline of September 1 approaching, Benfica may be forced to sell for a lower transfer fee should the German midfielder be adamant that he wants to leave the club.
At the moment, Gladbach head coach Daniel Farke and sporting director Roland Virkus are prioritising an attacker, but ideally they would like to add another midfielder to their squad before the deadline.
Weigl has previous Bundesliga experience, playing 171 games across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund before leaving for Benfica in 2020.
