Manchester United are keen on signing Borussia Monchengladbach vice-captain Yann Sommer, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Erik ten Hag finally got his first victory as Red Devils boss against Liverpool on Monday, but the Dutchman still has plenty of work to do before the transfer window closes, with a number two goalkeeper still on his radar.

What’s the involving news involving Sheth?

According to outlet Blick, United are interested in signing the 74-cap Switzerland international, with Ten Hag believed to be in the market for someone to provide competition and cover for David de Gea.

The report claims the Old Trafford outfit are debating whether to launch a bid for the 33-year-old and have had ‘internal discussions’ with the Borussia Monchengladbach star.

Sommer is out of contract next summer, but transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims that he’s been offered a three-year deal by the Bundesliga outfit.

And while Sheth confirmed United’s interest in the player, he reckons a move to the Theatre of Dreams is unlikely because Sommer will want to maintain his place as a first choice goalkeeper with the World Cup around the corner.

What did Sheth say about Sommer?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They have been interested in Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach, the Swiss number one as well. I’m not sure he would want to come to Manchester United because he is the number one for his club and his country with the World Cup only a few months away.

“And with Switzerland of course in it, he would want to maintain a number one position for the rest of the season or at least until the World Cup, so maybe that one would be a difficult one to do, even though Manchester United are interested.”

Would Sommer be a good signing for United?

With Ten Hag desperately looking for someone to compete with De Gea, Sommer would be an excellent addition to his squad.

Not only is he a veteran on the international stage, but the ex-Basel star has also racked up more than 600 first-team games at club level and would therefore bring a wealth of experience to the Red Devils squad.

But as Sheth alluded to, Sommer is unlikely to drop everything he currently has in Germany to come and sit on the bench at Old Trafford, so with that in mind, United will have to look at other targets.
