Manchester United’s offer for Frenkie de Jong has expired, according to Dutch journalist Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf.
The Barcelona player has refused to join the Premier League club despite lengthy talks between the parties to strike a deal.
Chelsea have also shown their interest in the midfielder but it now appears that United are out of the running with just two weeks remaining in the summer transfer window.
Barcelona opened their new La Liga campaign with a 0-0 draw at home to Rayo Vallecano on Saturday night. Xavi is expected to make a couple of changes for the club’s next game against Real Sociedad.
De Jong could start the match for the Blaugrana after impressing off the bench against Rayo and in the 6-0 Gamper Trophy victory over Mexican side Pumas.
The player is reportedly happy with life in Barcelona and wants to stay at Camp Nou, but has previously told a team-mate that Chelsea would be a good option.
