Borussia Mönchengladbach are leading the race to sign 26-year-old German midfielder Julian Weigl from Benfica, according to Sport Bild.
Weigl left Borussia Dortmund for Benfica in 2015 but could return to the Bundesliga on loan this summer. As previously reported by Kicker, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha Berlin have both shown an interest in signing the player, but Gladbach can imagine signing Weigl.
They had shown an initial interest but at the time, Benfica were only interested in a permanent deal – the Portuguese side wanted around €15m-€20m with Gladbach willing to pay no more than €9m. Now that Weigl is available on loan, the Bundesliga side are back in the running for the German.
With just over three weeks of the transfer window remaining, Daniel Farke’s priorities are on a new striker, but a deal for Weigl still remains possible.
During his time at Borussia Dortmund, Weigl played 171 games in all competitions.
