Como’s Raphael Varane set to retire from football

Como defender and France legend Raphael Varane is now set to retire from football after having picked up an injury early on in the season for the Italian side.

Varane had arrived at Como on a free transfer after his exit from Manchester United  but things have not gone to plan at all. The Frenchman picked up an injury in a cup game early on in the campaign and he was expected to be out of some months.

There was talk that Como could terminate Varane’s contract but the player was considering retirement. Matteo Moretto has confirmed that the player has made a decision and he will retire from the sport. An announcement about the decision could follow soon enough.

The stint at the Italian side hasn’t gone to plan at all and even at United, the centre-back had picked up a fair share of injuries. But he did make an impact and built a very good connection with the club and the fans – as he did at Real Madrid, where he won many trophies and also won the World Cup with France in 2018.

It is a rather unfortunate ending to his career but Varane has nothing to prove anymore.
